This is an excellent overview of a little known problem concerning Japan. Patrick’s U.S. citizen daughter was abducted to Japan by the Japanese mother. Despite internationaol arrest warrants and custody orders, there’s little the U.S. government can do because of the Japanese government’s refusal to cooperate. It’s a dirty little secret that Japan provides legal sanctuary to its citizens who abduct or retain their children in Japan. Foreign court orders and arrest warrants are ignored, and Japanese law does not even provide for visitation rights when children are separated from a parent through divorce or wedlock.
